HER OUTDOORS 2025 - Mountain Environment Walk - Wicklow
HER Outdoors Week from August 11th-17th is an opportunity to reignite and reintroduce females to the outdoors. Mountaineering Ireland are offering ALL females of all levels of experience the opportunity to escape to the outdoors and try something new. This week is all about building your confidence on the hills!
Each activity will be run by a qualified instructor. This is a great opportunity for all women interested in hillwalking to link in with peers and instructors in your area and develop your skills!
This Environmental Walk will be based in Wicklow, meeting at the Glendalough Visitor Centre (bring €4 for the carpark).
This event will start at 10am and will finish by approximately 4pm.
On this Environmental Walk, you will take a route from Glendalough, up Glendasan to the lead mines, up Camaderry (south-east top, 677m) and back down the eastern spur of Camaderry. Distance is 10km, the ascent is 540m. The terrain is mostly tracks and paths, with some rough and wet ground. The hike will include stops to look at and talk about what we find along the way, for that reason, it’s important to have some extra clothing. As well as learning about the natural environment of the Wicklow Mountains and this lovely hiking route, you will have an opportunity to take some photos of the beautiful landscape and micro features such as flowers, rocks etc.
These programmes are partially funded with an entry fee of only €15 per activity.
What gear do I need
Wear comfortable clothing like you would use for a walk - leggings, tracksuit bottoms, breathable T-Shirt and fleece & an extra warm layer. Pack a rain jacket and rain trousers, no matter the forecast! A hat and gloves might keep you safe from the wind. Wear good sturdy walking shoes or hillwalking boots with woolly or synthetic socks. Have a backpack with water, sunscreen, sandwiches and snacks, coffee, or tea. There is nothing more rewarding than a nice cup of coffee or tea drunk on top of the mountain! Don’t forget to bring first aid kit with plaster and bandages, personal medicine, inhaler, Epipen etc.
In Addition: Maps and compasses might be supplied by the instructor, but if you have compass and an OSI, Harvey or EastWest map of the area please bring them. Have your phone fully charged. Hopefully you won't get lost, but bring a whistle just in case!
