2023 Funded Research Projects

We are delighted to announce that the 2023 Research Grant Scheme application process is now complete and successful candidates have been notified. This year saw a further increase in the number of submissions reflecting the appetite to build research capacity and capability amongst our many National Governing Bodies, the LSP network and other funded bodies. In recognition of this demand, we offered a separate 3-year pathway giving SI’s partners an opportunity to partner with HEI’s to develop a doctoral level research project. The inaugural project will see Paralympics Ireland’s Dr. Alison O’Riordan collaborate with Professor Kate Pumpa at University College Dublin on a programme of research that will explore the development of talent identification and pathways in Para-athletics.

Our 1-year projects continue to cover a diverse range of domains from an 8-week dance programme for teenagers with Cavan LSP, the development of a concussion awareness programme by the LGFA, the IRFU’s examination of energy requirements in young male and female players and Vision Sports Ireland’s study on the experiences of teaching PE to children with vision impairment within mainstream primary schools. In total there will be a total of thirteen 1-year projects and one 3-year projects funded by the RGS. We look forward to sharing the findings of these projects as they reach completion in the coming year.
