Women’s Soccer : European Glory for Byrne and Grant

30 Apr 2007

Emma Byrne and Ciara Grant made Irish Football history yesterday when they became the first players from Ireland to win UEFA Women’s Cup winners medals.

The two Irish Internationals were part of the Arsenal team which captured the UEFA Cup after an exciting battle against the Swedish side UMEA, who had one two of the last four European titles.

Arsenal had gone into the 2nd leg leading 1 nil and as a result of a scoreless draw they became the first team outside Scandinavia and Germany to lift the UEFA Women’s Cup.

Both players played their part with Goalkeeper Emma Byrne being instrumental in winning the trophy by making a string of important saves. A third Irish player, Yvonne Treacy, missed the game because of injury.
