HOCKEY: Pegasus Win ESB Irish Senior Cup in Well Deserved Victory

Earlier today, Sunday 25th March, last year’s runner’s up Pegasus took on Pembroke Wanderers in the final of the ESB Irish Senior Cup, in UCD.

Pegasus started off the match dominating the game and won six penalty corners in the first half of the match but failed to convert the set pieces into goals. Pegasus continued to put the Pembroke defence under serious pressure and forced international keeper Mary Goode, to pull off some top class saves to keep her side in the game. Pembroke were lucky to close out half time with a clean sheet at nil all.

The Pembroke side managed to shift the gears up in the second half and got some attacking time of their own early on in the second thirty five, putting a solid Pegasus defence, headed up by international Jill Orbinson, under pressure for the first time in the game.

Pegasus finally got their break in the eleventh minute when Alex Speers took a shot on goal from the left side which was deflected up by keeper Goode, across the circle to find the experienced Claire McMahon volley a reverse stick shot into the back of Pembroke’s goal for a fine finish and the first goal of the match.

Pembroke were however, not without their chances and one minute later centre midfielder, Natalie Fulton found captain, Susan Ryan in on the keeper, forcing the Pegasus keeper to keep a cool head an clear her circle.

Although Pembroke had more chances in the second half, Pegasus continued to keep control winning four more penalty corners and creating some great break away attacking play. Without winning any penalty corners Pembroke found it hard to get the shots on goal with such a strong Pegasus defence.

The final closed out one nil to Pegasus making them the 2007 ESB Irish Senior Cup Champions. Number 12 for Pegasus, Claire McMahon was awarded ESB player of the match.
