"Taylor wins Silver and boxer of Tournament Award in Turkey"

Irish boxer Katie Taylor had to be content with a silver medal from the Ahmet Comet Cup in Turkey this afternoon (May 13th) after she was  controversially adjudged to have lost her 60Kg final to  Tatar Gulson.

Eyebrows were raised when Taylor, who is the reigning World and European champion, was handed  a 16-13 reversal against the Turk despite  dominating the decider in the Turkish capitol.

Amazingly, in the context of the result, Taylor was presented with the boxer of the tournament award after the tournament in the Turkish capitol.

According to her coach and father Peter Taylor, who was in his daughters corner in Istanbul, Gulson was on the canvas six times in the three rounder.

He said: "Katie completely dominated the fight and I would be reluctant  to say anything further than that except that Gulson was on the floor six times.

"I think the fact that Katie was presented with the boxer of the tournament award speaks for itself. Katie performed magnificently out here in all her four fights. The objective was to get some competitive fights under her belt and we are happy with that."

In the President Cup in Azerbaijan, which concluded on Saturday, Oliver Plunkets middleweight Tommy McCarthy won silver and Saints light heavyweight Dominic Gallagher took home bronze.

St Saviours OBA middleweight Darren Sutherland won a bronze medal at the Chemistry Cup in Germany after losing his semi final to German Constantine Buga.
