Taylor and Egan scoop World and European Boxer of the Year titles

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association were celebrating on the double yesterday after Katie Taylor and Ken Egan scooped the World and European boxers of  2006 awards on the Amateur Boxing Association website.
 
 
Taylor, from the St Fergal's club in Bray, who landed the world lightweight title in New Delhi in November, comfortable outpolled second place Yum Ku Ju of North Korea to win the world women's boxer of 2006 award.

And Neilstown Dublin light heavyweight Ken Egan finished on top to claim the European men's boxer of 2006 gong.
 
2006 European senior bronze medallistEgan, will be  targeting his senior 7th  title on the trot at the  Irish senior championships which begin at the Stadium in Dublin on January 19  next.
 
And the 24 year old Dubliner reckons that because 2007 is Olympic qualifying year that the blue ribband tournament of Irish amateur boxing will be all the more intense.
 
He said: "I'm delighted to win the website award and it is a great start to what will be a very busy year for me.
 
"It is going to be a big year for everyone concerned as you we are all looking ahead to next Septembers world championships in Moscow which will also act as Olympic qualifiers.
 
"The Irish senior championships are the first rung of the ladder in the process for Olympic qualification
and this year they will have an added edge.

 
"I would be confident that I can successfully defend my Irish senior title but I won't be taking anything
for granted as you never know who will come out of the woodwork."
 
 
 
Boxing fans can now can purchase season tickets for every major tournament at the National Stadium in Dublin in 2007  for just €100.
 
The season ticket will cover international meetings,the  National Senior, Intermediate, U/21, Cadet, Junior, and Schoolboy championships, and also the EU Championships  which will be held at the Stadium in June 2007.
 
The IABAs Award night, which will celebrate another outstanding year for Irish amateur boxing,  will be held at the Ringside Club adjacent to  the Stadium on January 13th next. Tickets are priced at €35.
