Sport Ireland has today congratulated Ireland’s first medallist of the Paralympic Games 2020. Para-swimmer Ellen Keane took Gold in the pool with a stunning race in the SB8 100m Breaststroke.

Ellen started off her 4th Paralympic Games with a personal best and a first place win in her heat before turning her attention to the final.  She saw off tough competition from New Zealand and Spain to secure the gold medal and a second personal best of the day.

Chairman of Sport Ireland Kieran Mulvey said: “Ellen has been a stalwart of Paralympic sport in Ireland having competed at four Paralympic Games and today she showed once again what she is capable of. To achieve two personal bests in one day and claim Gold is testament to the hard work and determination over many years. Congratulations to Ellen and the team who have made this possible”.

Sport Ireland Chief Executive John Treacy added: “On behalf of Sport Ireland I would like to congratulate Ellen on her inspirational achievement today in Tokyo. Ellen is a role model for so many and her achievements to date speak volumes for her passion for para-swimming. I would also like to congratulate the team in Paralympics Ireland, her coaches, her family and all who have supported Ellen throughout her career”.
