Gold for Ireland at World University Rowing Championships

The Irish heavyweight men's four crew (M4-) of James Wall, Daniel Barry, Paul O'Brien & Paul Murray lived up to expectations as they repeated their heat victory to secure the gold medal at the World University Championships held in Trakai, Lithuania over the weekend.

With almost a three second lead after the first 500m, the Irish were in total control of the race for the remaining 1500m, pulling up before the finish line to win comfortably ahead of the French and Italian crews who took second and third place respectively.

Victory in Lithuania will make up for the disappointment of the same crew which missed out on a medal at the recent Under 23 World Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium.

Rory O'Connor (DCU) finished seventh overall when he won the 'B' Final in the Lightweight Men's Single Skulls on Saturday, while the Lightweight Men's Double Sculls of Danny O'Dowd and Eoghan Garvey were also in final action on Saturday finishing second in the 'B' Final to secure 8th place overall.

Men's Four: Paul Murray (NUI Galway), Paul O'Brien (NUI Maynooth), Daniel Barry (Limerick IT), James Wall (NUI Galway).
Lightweight Men's Double Sculls: Eoghan Garvey (Ballyfermot College of Further Education) & Daniel O'Dowd (NUI Galway) Lightweight Men's Single
Sculls: Rory O'Connor (Dublin City University)

Coach: Katie Foulkes
