Pitch and Putt: National Matchplay Finals

31 May 2007

The Pitch and Putt National Championships will be held in Stackallen Pitch and Putt Club, Co Meath over the June Bank Holiday weekend.  The Finals will have the leading 64 Men and 32 Ladies Pitch and Putt Players in the country battling for the coveted titles.

The number one ranked Lady in the country and the number one seed for the Championship, Chrissie Byrne from the St Bridgets’s club in Kilcullen, Co Kildare will be defending the title she won last year. Other strong contenders in the Ladies are Margaret Hogan, Tullamore, the current National Strokeplay champion, Ger Ward, Portmarnock and the up and coming Tracey McGrath (Erry).

The favourite for the Men’s title is local hero, Sean Downes, who is one of the most gifted pitch and putt players in the world. The first match brings together the current double champion and number one ranked player in the country, Ray Murphy (Templebreedy) and former champion (n 2003) Darren Reilly (CPM). This should be a real cracker as both are in contention for a place on the International Team to compete later in the year at the European Championships in Chia Lugana, Sardinia. Another intriguing match will be the clash of the brothers from the Bruff club in Limerick Liam and Thomas O Donovan.
