The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month April 2025: Katie McCabe (Football)

The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman Award for May: Katie McCabe (Football)

Republic of Ireland Women’s National Football team captain Katie McCabe had already won a cabinet-full of club honours before she took to the pitch in Lisbon for the Champions League final, among them league titles in Ireland, Scotland and England.  Arsenal’s victory in the Portuguese capital on that evening in May, with a 1-0 victory over the red-hot favourites and three-in-a-row seeking Barcelona, ensured she claimed the most prized honour of all.

McCabe's performance at left-back played no small part in Arsenal's success. The Dubliner kept Caroline Graham Hansen, one of the best wingers in the game, quiet throughout.

She became just the fourth Irish woman, after her Arsenal predecessors Emma Byrne, Ciara Grant and Yvonne Tracy, to win the competition. This was the club's first Champions League triumph in 18 years. They remain the only English club to have achieved that feat.

Congratulations to Katie McCabe as she adds to her list of accolades with The Irish Times Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Month award for May 2025.
