Golf: EuroPro Tour Success for Michael Mc Dermott

Michael Mc Dermott has won his fist professional tournament yesterday at Stoke–by–Nayland, Essex yesterday when winning the latest event on the EuropPro Tour.  Michael has become the 3rd Irish winner on the EuroPro tour in 2007 following earlier victories by Colm Moriarty and Brian McElhinney. Michael won £10,000stg for his great win.

Michael is a member of Stackstown Golf Club, the same club as Padraig Harrington. Following his success Michael said "When I put it in it was a weight off my shoulders.  I got off to a terrible start on day one as I was four over after five holes but continued playing my game. My season has gone pretty well and spent most of the winter playing in America. This breaks the barrier of winning my first tournament, so winning next time might not be so difficult. The greens here were just fantastic. I really wish we could play on that every week”.

Michael’s victory has lifted him up to fifth in the Order of Merit Money list, while Colm Moriarty remains first despite failing to make the cut this week.
Michael like Moriarty and McElhinney is supported by Team Ireland Golf Trust. In 2007, Michael received an allocation of €10,000 from the Trust.

The Team Ireland Golf Trust is a public private partnership designed to provide support, both financial and non-financial, to emerging Irish professional golfers to help them realise their potential on the world stage.

Golfers on the scheme have access to the sports science and medicine network already provided by the Irish Sports Council to high performance athletes on the International Carding Scheme. Access to these services is administered by the National Coaching and Training Centre in Limerick.

Since 2006 golfers supported by the Trust are able to freely access the Golfing Union of Ireland’s new National Academy facilities at Carton Demesne in Maynooth, Co. Kildare.
