FINAL RESULTS FOR IRISH CREWS AT OPENING ROWING WORLD CUP

Sunday June 3rd 2007

Men’s heavy four win B final, Duddy 5th in lightweight single A final

On the final day’s racing at the Rowing World Cup regatta in Linz, Austria Ireland’s best result in the Olympic class boats came from the heavyweight four (M4-) who won their B final, taking 7th overall, with both lightweight boats; the women’s double (LW2x), and the men’s four (LM4-) taking 12th overall. In the non Olympic classes World Cup debutant Orla Duddy finished 5th in the lightweight single scull(LW2x) A final.

The heavyweight four (M4-) of Alan Martin, Sean Casey, Cormac Folan and Sean O’Neill were only momentarily headed by the second choice German crew at the halfway mark in their B final but took control for the remainder winning in a time of 6.07.11.

In their B final the men’s lightweight four of Paul Griffin, Richard Archibald, Eugene Coakley, and newcomer Cathal Moynihan showed further improvement on their earlier races here during the course of the 2000m test this morning sticking with the pace until the last quarter, taking 6th in the finish.

The women’s lightweight double suffered much the same fate as yesterday in today’s B final, starting slowly and not getting into the necessary rhythm to mount a challenge finishing 6th in it; 12th overall.

The heavy four fairly dominated their B final today which is what we hoped they would do, they’ve held their position from last year, and we can look to build on that now. Orla deserves a lot of credit for the way she performed here; 5th overall is an excellent return for her first World Cup regatta. The light four have showed good progress at this regatta as this new combination while the women’s double never really got going though and will be frustrated with how they performed. Overall we’ve got a good indicator of where things  are at the moment. We will analyse all our performances here, and work on things in preparation for the next leg of the World Cup in Amsterdam”, stated Irish team manager Mick O’Callaghan after the Irish crews finished racing today.

The next World Cup regatta (the second of the three leg series) takes place in three weeks time in Amsterdam.

The overall World Cup champions are determined after a series of three regattas (Linz, Amsterdam in late June & Lucerne in July) with the centrepiece of the International season the World Championships in Munich, Germany beginning August 26th which, this year, is the main Olympic qualifying regatta with the majority of places on offer.
Ends.
