European Union Boxing Championships go ahead in Dublin

Seventeen nations including Ireland have already been confirmed to take part in the European Union Boxing Championships which goes ahead at the National Stadium in Dublin this June.
 
Bulgaria, Denmark, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy,  Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Scotland, Spain, Turkey and Ireland will be competing.
 
It is expected that up to twenty five nations will be involved in the eagerly awaited tournament at the South Circular Road venue this summer.
 
The Championships will be attended by Dr Ching Kuo-Wu who was elected President of the AIBA last year.
 
Neilstown light heavyweight Ken Egan, who won gold at this level in Italy in 2005 and bronze in Hungary in 2006, will be targeting his third medal on the trot at the Championships between June 17th and 25th.
 
Middleweight Andy Lee, who represented Ireland at the 2004 Olympics, is the only other Irish boxer to win at medal at the EU Championships claiming silver in Madrid in 2004.
 
Meanwhile,the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA), have named an eight man squad for the upcoming double header of international meetings with Russia in Dublin and Athlone.
 
Both nations meet at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday April 27th (7.25pm) and at the Athlone Institute of Technology on Sunday  April 29th (7.30pm)
 
The Russians have announced a nine man squad while Irish national senior heavyweight champ Ian Tims could be included on the Irish panel to match up the 81Kg category.
