Athletics Ireland appoint Devlin as High Performance Manager

Athletics Ireland have announced Gareth Devlin as their new High Performance Manager.

Devlin is a two time Irish National Senior Long Jump Champion and was a senior international athlete from 1994 until his retirement in 2002.  The Derry native is currently ranked in the top 10 Irish Long Jumpers.

The former Ballymena and Antrim AC athlete was also the Northern Ireland Long Jump Champion four times.  He takes up the role following the departure of Elaine Fitzgerald from the position in March.

Devlin’s role as High Performance Manager will be to identify athletes with high performance athletic talent and to develop them to their full potential.  He will also provide support to Ireland’s elite athletes to enhance their performances at international competitions.

Speaking on his appointment Devlin said, “I’m excited about the opportunity of working as the High Performance Manager for Athletics Ireland.  I am looking forward to being part of the Athletics Ireland staff that aims to bring Irish athletics to the next level.  We have high profile athletes who are bringing medals back to Ireland at present, it is important that we work to get more athletes to this level of success.”

Brendan Hackett, CEO of Athletics Ireland, welcomed the appointment.  “This is a very challenging position but in Gareth I believe we have found the perfect person to take up the role.  Gareth’s excellent background in business coupled with his history in athletics and genuine enthusiasm for the sport I think he will be a great addition to our team”, Hackett said.
