Canoeing: Eoin Rheinisch 6th in European Championships

20 Jun 2007

Eoin Rheinisch finished in an excellent 6th place in the KI on 17th June at the European Championships in Liptovsky, Mikulas, Slovakia. This was an impressive performance particularly as Eoin missed two days training as he had to obtain a replacement boat.

His semi-final run started poorly when he touched a pole of the upstream game gate 4 and could not afford anymore mistakes. He completed the remainder of the course faultlessly, eventually finishing in 4th place. He had an agonizing wait as only 10 places were available for the final. Luckily he had done enough and qualified in 7th place for the final.

The Final was based on cumulative times over two runs. Eoin finished in 6th place, just 1.5 seconds behind the bronze medalist Campbell Walsh of Britain. The Gold medal was won by Jan Sasbidor of Slovakia.

Eoin said “ I am proud of how I coped with my boat not being the way I wanted it to be and I am happy I made the final even with my touch. I know I have the speed and I will keep trying until my day comes.”

Eoin will be chasing Olympic qualification at the World Championships in Brazil next month and compete next in the World Cup Series in Germany.

Eoin is in the Irish Sports Council’s International Carding Scheme and is supported at World Class Level. He also received substantial support from the Irish Institute of Sport in preparation for his European and World Championship campaigns.
