Boxing: Irish Squad named for World Amateur Boxing Championships

Irish team for World Championships

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association named a full squad of 11 boxers to compete in next month's World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago.

The World Championships are the first of three qualifying events for the 2008 Olympic Games. The Championships have attracted a record entry from 115 nations and commence on October 23rd.

All quarter-finalists from light-fly (48Kg) to light-heavy (81 Kg) and semi-finalists from heavy (91Kg) and super-heavy(91+Kg) will qualify for next year's Olympics.

The Irish team includes 9 reigning Irish champions, and the three gold medal winners, Roy Sheahan, welter, Darren Sutherland, middle and Kenneth Egan, light-heavy, at the European Union Championships held in the National Stadium in June.
