OB Sport - Fri 2nd Feb @ 7.30pm on RTE TWO TV

Pat O’Callaghan, Bob Tisdall, Michael Carruth, Ronnie Delany – their names will go down in history as Olympic champions.  Irish Olympic champions.

But, more than 50 years after Ireland’s last Athletics gold, where will the next medal come from?  Will it be rowing, or boxing, shooting or equestrian?  Might success even come on the track?

The man charged with answering this question is the former president of the GAA, Sean Kelly – the Executive Chairman of the new Irish Institute of Sport.  His job, simply put, is to produce sporting champions for Ireland.

Launched last year, the Institute will eventually be based at the proposed national sports campus at Abbotstown – where it will provide athletes from all sports with a one-stop shop for coaching, sports science, medical backup and strength & conditioning facilities.

But the Institute’s first mission is to support those athletes with a realistic chance of making the next Olympics and Paralympics – that’s in Beijing, just a year and a half from now…

All in this week's episode of OB Sport this Friday (Feb 2nd) at 7.30pm on RTE TWO TV. also on the show; sports nutrition, and the Irish Opens in Ten Pin Bowling and Archery.
