Local Sports Partnership

We’re having quite a year, and we all need a little help to get us through. Starting with a plan to do one small thing that will keep you well is a great way to look after your mental health and wellbeing. Sport Ireland has partnered with Healthy Ireland to help you keep active and well this winter. 

Keeping active and being outdoors, even during the winter, is important to help physical and mental health and wellbeing. The Sport Ireland network of Local Sports Partnerships are working hard in their communities to deliver programmes and support to help people be active and keep well. 

The below list of programmes gives an idea of what the network of Local Sports Partnerships are offering. If you are interested in joining any of the programmes below contact your Local Sports Partnership and get active and well in your community. 

Carlow Sports Partnership

Connect Fit Exercise Programme

  • The ConnectFit project is a free 10-week exercise programme targeted at getting people aged 60 and over more active! The programme will help to forge new connections and a sense of togetherness virtually within our community through exercise.

Zero to Three with Me

  •  A 6-week exercise block aimed at new parents (primarily mothers) who wish to engage in physical activity in an environment that is welcoming to both them and their child/children. This class will provide an avenue for physical activity but also be a social outlet for parents who may be experiencing isolation in the current pandemic.

Online Chair Exercise for Older Adults

  • A 4 week programme delivered through Zoom to improve and maintain fitness followed by a social interaction. This programme will help maintain good mental wellbeing and is delivered through the Bagenalstown Resource Centre.

Operation Keep Well - Virtual Challenge

  • 4 week virtual challenge. Participants will receive  a wall planner and a weekly email with daily fun challenges and ideas to get active and encourage them to Keep Well and active.
  • This is a fun and inclusive challenge suitable for all ages and abilities, great for the family to take part together

 Walk to Wellness

  • The Walk to Wellness  programme aims to increase daily step count and ensure students are regularly reaching the National Guidelines for Physical Activity of 10,000 steps per day with the support of a ‘Buddy’. The programme will also raise awareness on wellbeing topics such as body imagine and mental health in partnership with Mental Health Ireland and BodyWhys.

  •  'The Daily Mile' for primary schools will take in the daily mile for the duration of the Keep Well initiative

Men on the Move 2021

  •  Men on the Move beginners programme is a physical activity programme aimed at supporting men to become active and improve their health in a fun and sociable environment. The programme takes place online and lasts for 6 weeks.

Staying Fit for the Future

  • The Staying Fit for the Future with Better Balance Better Bones programme is a 12 week physical activity programme for older adults that will improve strength and balance as well as your general aerobic fitness.

  Project Weightloss

  • A  12 Week exercise intervention programme targeted at individuals who are currently overweight and inactive. Individuals with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 25 are eligible for the programme. Sessions are run twice a week online and comprise of a wide range of exercise activities, equipping participants with the tools to be able to manage their weight in a healthy and safe manner. A substantial logbook is used alongside the practical sessions as a motivational tool, reference and record of activity and progress.

Healthy Food Made Easy

  • Healthy Food Made Easy is a 6-week peer-led nutrition and cookery course developed by community dieticians, aimed at helping people of all ages to make affordable healthier choices when shopping, cooking and eating which in turn can ultimately help reduce diet related conditions.

 Sprocket Rocket - Cycling

  •  Cork Sports Partnership, Wild Atlantic Sports and Cycling Ireland are delighted to bring the interactive 6-part Sprocket Rocket series to Cork families. Sprocket Rocket is a fun skills programme where children aged 5 to 11 are taught four FUNdamental cycling skills. The programme focuses on 4 main skills; Cornering, Pedalling, Braking and Balance. It is ideal for learning and developing skills and can be delivered by clubs, teachers, parents or anyone else involved with young cyclists.

Get Active - Keep Well

  • Complete the the Minimum Fitness Tests  developed by Operation Transformation, in collaboration with DCU School of Health and Human Performance, to demonstrate the minimum fitness standard for your age group. These tests are designed to show you where you sit within the minimum standards of physical fitness and give you a target to aim for within your age bracket and gender.

  • As part of the WellComm Active initiative and in line with the Keeping Cork Active and Keep Well Campaigns, Cork Sports Partnership has teamed up with a number of local partners and organisations to bring a series of online information sessions to support people to Get Active and Keep Well for 2021.

Donegal Sports Partnership

Programme – Older Adults Activity Planner

  • 5,000 editions of the Older Adult Home Exercise Plan have been distributed across Co Donegal as part of a collaboration piece with Age Friendly Alliance; this will now be followed up with short instructional videos to bring the activity resource to life, which will be available for download or viewing through the DSP Activity HUB

Balanceability 'Learn to Cycle'

  • Parents Resource. Step-by-Step guide supporting parents to teach their children how to ride a bike. Targeting families at home during COVID restrictions that may have more time on their hands. Once registered, parents are added to a private Facebook group where visual aids and regular mentoring support will be available from a qualified Balanceability instructor each day.

Fitness classes

  • Online chair aerobics Fitness  delivered by Paul Smyth Inclusive Health & Fitness in conjunction with the Irish Wheelchair Association.  Each session is 30 minutes long and there are 6 in total. These classes are for clients of the Irish Wheelchair Association in Donegal.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership

IWA Multi Sports Club

  • A 10 week virtual multi-sport club for children with a physical disability. Weekly zoom sessions for 10-20 children with supervisors facilitated by the LSPs and Irish Wheelchair Association. Each week the participants will have 10 minutes of meet and greet followed by 40 minutes of a different sport each week

Older Adults Online Exercise Classes

  • Join Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership and Siel Bleu for a 12-week online exercise programme for over 55's and a second one for over 65's. They are free, interactive and will include a phone call with the instructor before the first session to make sure the participants are prepared and if they have any particular needs

Fingal Sports Partnership

Programme - Fingal Digifit

  • This programme is made up of 20 home training sessions to help you stay active at home.

Programme - DigiFit for All

  • This programme of adaptive exercise  videos are ideal for people who prefer more gentle activities or who have limited mobility. The activities shown are perfect for those who have recently been cocooning and combine stretches, upper & lower body exercises and target games for a complete workout. Remember to consult your doctor before exercising and keep to the social distancing guidelines if you want to make those target games a little more competitive.

Nutrition Webinar Series

  • Online nutrition series are led by a qualified nutritionist and looks at various aspects of nutrition such as: winter nutrition, food for mood and healthy habits. Rach session is one hour long and suitable for adults.

Run Your Town - Family Orienteering

  • This family orienteering event can be done in a number of towns around Fingal using your mobile phone on a short, medium or long course. it is suitable for children and adults of all abilities

 Programme 5 – HomeFit

  • Free online classes are open to all levels of ability and consist of 30-40-minute sessions delivered by qualified coaches with 3 classes per week delivered live online at 10:00am. The sessions required 'little to no equipment'  and are suitable for adults. The classes available are: Body Mind Movement, Full Body Workout and Chair Exercise

Online Hip Hop & Zumba Classes for children

  • Online weekly Hip Hop & Zumba Classes will be broadcast live via Zoom over 3 weeks in February and March 2021 from 6pm to 7pm. The sessions will be led and choreographed by Donna Moran (Irish Hip Hop Master Champions, Fit Kids/Fit Teens Dance School) and are suitable for children aged 12-17 years.

Programme 7 – Active Club Challenge

  • 6 week challenge for sports clubs to set up walking, running or cycling groups to which both non-members and members can be a part of. Registered clubs will receive training information, access to nutrition and exercise webinars to encourage maximum involvement. All activities are subject to public health guidelines.

Kildare Sports Partnership

Community Outdoor Activity Leaders Award - "The COLA Programme"

  • This 12 week online course aims to help communities and individuals to "Keep Well" and become resilient during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. This programme is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to confidently and competently organise and lead outdoor initiatives for leisure-based activity in their community. Training is provided through a blended learning approach. Participants will be required to participate in a range of Online Workshops, Zoom Conference Meetings and Face to Face outdoor sessions (working strictly within the parameters of the Government’s re-opening Ireland Roadmap).
  • Walking Leader training covers the theory and practical aspects of establishing and leading Nordic Pole, Urban, Hill and Trail Trekking. To complement the development of the Blueway and Greenway infrastructures in County Kildare, practical walking leader sessions will be held along our Canal Towpath Trails (post lockdown). Supplementary skills training is delivered by recognised service providers and participants will receive accredited certification on completion of each upplementary module.

Laois Fit

  • This 12 week programme is catered for people of all ages and abilities.  The workshops cover nutrition, importance of getting active, aerobic exercise and resistance training, balance and flexibility, exercise prescription for healthy heart, metabolic health, arthritis, osteoporosis and setting health and fitness goals. Classes and workshops will take place online.

Springtime Orienteering

  • Laois LSP are encouraging families and individuals who live within the 5km radius of Emo Court or Portlaoise to make use of the orienteering facilities in available in the area. It is a great way to get out of the house, into the fresh air and enjoy some quality time with the family, exploring new sports within your area. Community Coaching Programme 2021

  • Programme – Running throughout March and April, participants will take part in a range of coach education and training courses certified by Sport Ireland and NGB's (National Governing Bodies for Sport). The programme is intended for candidates interested in improving their knowledge in coaching children and young people. Some experience or involvement with children and sport is recommended but not essential.

Fitness From Home

  • In association with Operation Transformation and Healthy Ireland Keep Well Campaign, Limerick LSP are hosting a  ‘Fitness from Home’ online workout programme. Suitable for all levels of fitness. Classes will include the Operation Transformation minimum fitness standard tests as well as Aerobic & Strength based exercises.

Men on the Move

  • Online physical activity programme for Men aged 30+ who want to get back into physical activity. This programme focuses on improving functional fitness incorporating elements of aerobic fitness, mobility, flexibility and strength into each session.

Adapted Men on the Move

  • Physical activity programme for men with varying abilities who want to gain confidence and improve their physical activity levels in a social group setting. Sessions are non-competitive and are structured so participants can engage at a pace that suits their own ability.

 Mental Health First Aid

  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the initial help given to someone who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional support is received or until the crises resolves. this 2 day course is suitable for  sports coaches/volunteers/ community representatives

 Zoom Turbo Cycling Programme

  •  6 Week Zoom Turbo Cycling Programme. LSP have distributed 25 Turbos to Beginner cyclists to attend our twice weekly cycling sessions. The 45-minute session will be delivered by a qualified tutor over the Zoom platform.

Desk to 5KM

  • Desk to 5km is a 6 week ‘Couch to 5km’ style beginner training programme aimed at anyone who would like to increase their physical activity levels to progress from walking/jogging 3km, to completing 5km at the end of the 6 weeks. TJoe O’Connor, Ireland’s Fittest Families and Lilly-Ann O’Hora, Athletics Ireland will provide tips and advice while you train, as this year the programme is in a NEW podcast format. The team will guide & motivate you through the sessions as you listen to the ‘follow along’ Podcasts. Completing 3 sessions per week over 6 weeks- you will progress from ‘Desk to 5km’ following the training programme developed by Athletics Ireland.

Mayo Sports Partnership

Mayo Day 20212 Women's Virtual 10km

  • Registrations are now open for the Mayo Day 2021 Womens Virtual 10K event. The hugely successful Mayo.ie Western People West of Ireland Womens Mini Marathon has gone virtual for the 2nd year due to the ongoing pandemic.  Following on from the hugely successful 10K Your Way run / walk in 2020 the 2021 virtual 10K allows participants to allocate €10 of their entry fee to a charity of their choice. Participants will receive a medal and t-shirt and they can also wear a race number with the name of the hero they would like to nominate written across it.

Yoga

 Move Well Videos

  •  Meath LSP in association with Meath County Council, Age Friendly Meath and Sport Ireland have produced an exercise DVD for older people and people with a disability. The resource includes 4 dance and 4 seated Pilates classes which can all be completed from your home. The resource is also availa ble on USB so it can be used on a laptop, tablet or Smart TV.

Skipping for Families

  • Skipping is a great way for people of all ages to be active. Meath LSP can provide you with a skipping rope and a booklet containing teaching points and links to tutorial videos on various skills. Skipping is an activity that requires little space and resources and can be done either inside or outside.

Active Teens Pilates

  • Discover the core-strengthening and total-body-toning benefits of this online Pilates programme specifically aimed towards teenagers and young people.  Stronger for Longer

  • The new Stronger for Longer encourages men and women over the age of 50 to engage in a fun, supervised 8-week physical activity programme. The programme is delivered online via Zoom and is facilitated by experienced exercise and fitness instructors who will support you in a series of moderate intensity physical activity sessions twice a week throughout the 8-week period.

  •  Move at 3 is a short exercise session tailored for older adults live on the new Live at 3 programme The Horan Stand. The programme helps to connect and engage older people in the local community and will take place weekly from January until March.

  • Join this 4 week prrogramme of walks, talks and wellbeing initiatives helping you create positive habits for a healthier, happier and more active 2021. It is comprised of a 12minute endurance test, the national 21 Day Walks Challenge from Get Ireland Walking, a series of three online talks by guest speakers (Nial Moyna, Pat Falvey and Shane Martin) on health and wellbeing.
