This loop follows green arrows along the embankment of the Shannon Headrace as far as Parteen Weir, returning along the banks of the River Shannon. Apart from the climb up the road to join the embankment and descent off it, this is a level walk on grassy and riverside paths. It is a very pleasant countryside walk although some of the riverbank may be wet.

Tríona from Limerick

The trail along the south part of the island is lovely and approaching the Parteen weir it's very impressive. Unfortunately, the signage on the north bank is poor. From the weir, you should go along the grass on top of the bank rather than following the gravel road which leads to a gate that is padlocked shut. The grass is very slippery if it has rained recently and the canal is deep so take care.

Had a lovely afternoon walk. I am beginner hiker, so this was perfect for me. Walk took me longer though...as I like to take photos and got great shots along the way and wandered here and there, even put my toes to water. Found geocache on this loop. www.geocaching.com
