Gerry Carmody

Gerry Carmody, 63, has always been passionate about sports and used to play football competitively. Six years ago, the father of two suffered a stroke and a heart attack and initially required a wheelchair.

Gerry made a great recovery with the support of his family and friends, and he became a regular member of his gym. Since lockdown restrictions began, he has once again adapted the ways in which he keeps active.

“It's the gym that I miss terribly,” said Gerry. “The social aspect is just as important as the exercise itself, especially for older people who might otherwise feel isolated. Everyone loved working out together and then sitting down for a cup of tea afterwards. It was also an opportunity to hear about other people’s experiences and how they came out the other end.”

In light of this, Gerry became a regular at an online movement class with Age and Opportunity which he now attends three times a week on Facebook Live - something he never would have imagined doing before.

“The classes keep me in touch with people I know from the gym, as well as keeping me active. I’m also lucky enough to live beside Phoenix Park where I’m an avid walker these days. Although Covid has turned everything upside down, you can still adapt and enjoy the social aspect of exercise. Years ago when I had my health scares, it was a huge shock for me, but I had a lot of great support and I was determined to get back on my feet. Now I’m adapting again to stay active.”
