Sport Ireland deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Ciara Mageean
CEO statement on the death of Ciara Mageean
The sports sector is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Ciara Mageean.
Ciara was a world-class athlete whose achievements inspired a nation, from her early success in sport to her unforgettable European 1500m title, a sporting moment that will live long in the memory. Yet her impact extended far beyond medals and records.
What made Ciara truly special was her love of sport at every level. She was as passionate about encouraging children and young people to take part in sport as she was about competing on the biggest stages in the world. She was never happier than when sharing her love of running with young athletes, inspiring girls and boys alike to believe in themselves and experience the joy of sport. She had time for everyone and was a natural mentor to so many younger and up and coming athletes on any team she was on. She was always bubbly and enthusiastic about everything when you’d bump into her on the Campus and Institute, she always had time for a warm friendly chat.
Ciara embodied excellence throughout her sporting journey, from her camogie roots to becoming one of Ireland's greatest ever athletes. Through the highs and lows of elite sport, she carried herself with honesty, warmth and remarkable courage. In recent times, she showed that same bravery in publicly sharing her cancer journey, helping others through her openness and strength.
Ciara was a hero to so many and an enormously positive presence within Irish sport. Her passing is a profound loss for all of us in Sport Ireland and across the wider sporting community. She will be remembered not only for her achievements, but for the joy, kindness and inspiration she brought to everyone whose lives she touched.
On behalf of Sport Ireland and the wider sports sector, I extend our deepest sympathies to her husband Thomas, her family, friends, teammates and all who loved her.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
