Philip Browne RIP
Sport Ireland is saddened by the passing of Philip Browne, former CEO of the IRFU.
From 2005 to 2021 Philip was also a member of the Irish Sport Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, a panel of experts who are available to hear and determine a case or appeal arising out of the Irish Anti-Doping rules.
As IRFU CEO he led Irish rugby into the professional era, establishing strong provincial structures, enhancing high-performance pathways, and underpinning consistent success across the men’s and women’s international teams.
Philip joined the IRFU in July 1992 before being appointed Chief Executive in 1998.
He oversaw significant growth in the commercial and organisational strength of the IRFU, putting the game on a strong footing at all levels.
A former Irish international in rowing, he stood down from his role in 2021, having led the IRFU through the pandemic.
Dr Úna May, Sport Ireland CEO, said: “Philip was a widely respected figure, both inside and outside sport. We were very lucky to have him as a member of our Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel, where he demonstrated great character and credibility. He was always very giving of his time and expertise.”
