Sport Ireland and Weightlifting Ireland jointly announce that Eoin Kealy has committed an anti-doping rule violation

Sport Ireland and Weightlifting Ireland jointly announced today that Eoin Kealy has committed an anti-doping rule violation.  

Mr Kealy, a weightlifter, tested positive for a Metabolite of drostanolone (3a-hydroxy-2a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one) during in-competition testing on June 28th, 2025 contrary to Articles 2.1 and 2.2 of the Irish Anti-Doping Rules.  

On August 7th , 2025 Sport Ireland notified Mr Kealy that he was provisionally suspended. On August 8th 2025 Mr Kealy requested that his ‘B’ Sample be analysed. The B Sample analysis of September 4th 2025 confirmed the ‘A’ Sample result.  

On October 3rd 2025 Sport Ireland formally charged the athlete with the ADRVs. The athlete admitted the violations and sanctions proposed by Sport Ireland on October 22nd 2025.     

As the athlete has admitted to the ADRVs and accepted the sanctions the period of ineligibility is reduced from four years to three years, pursuant to Article 10.7.1 of the Rules. The three-year ban takes effect from August 7th, 2025. The athlete's period of ineligibility shall expire at midnight on August 6th, 2028.
