The Old Rail Trail is a rural route through the heart of the Irish midlands connecting the bustling town of Athlone with the market town of Mullingar passing through the town of Moate. The route is 40km along a converted stretch of the former Midlands Great Western Railway and passes through rich fertile farmland away from the hustle of towns.

Bus and train to Mullingar and Athlone

Conor McCarthy from Westmeath

Having to slow down all the time to weave through fences at crossings is a pain. Be prepared to pee in a bush because there's no toilets from Mullingar all the way to Athlone without going into a restaurant which you can't now anyway. The path is well kept though and paved all the way and off the roads apart from crossing a few so no fear of dying... so that's good 👍
