Education Support

Education is just one of the many challenges an athlete faces in their athletic career and one that can have a huge impact on their performance.

The Sport Ireland Institute works with all athletes to develop the skills and competencies they need to combine their ongoing education with their sport, allowing them to fulfill their potential in both areas.

Education may take many forms through different stages of your life:

  • Junior Certificate / Leaving Certificate
  • Transition Year
  •  Repeat Leaving Certificate
  • Third Level Education
  •  Part time / Full time study
  • Blended learning
  • On-line learning
  • Vocational Study
  • Post-Graduate Study

The Sport Ireland Institute life skills team works with athletes to help them evaluate their options and to make informed decision regarding their education. Decisions such as course or institute selection and part-time study options can impact positively on their athletic performance. Other options such as studying part-time, deferring examinations of course work or taking distance learning options or even exams at Irish embassies abroad can impact hugely on the athlete.

Athletes are encouraged to to self-manage their career but do so with the knowledge that support and assistance are available to them where and when they may need it.

Sport Ireland Institute has developed strong links with universities/third level providers and work closely with them to support carded athletes to develop a high specific performance sport and education plan. This typically involves modification to the teaching or assessment programme of the athlete-student to facilitate their training and recovery needs.

These academic partners are extremely supportive and the number of high performance Irish athletes in education is increasing every year.
